Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are a type of fat that is found naturally in foods such as coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and dairy products.
It composed of fatty acids with medium-chain lengths, typically ranging from 6 to 12 carbon atoms.
Foods such as butter, ghee or yoghurt contain short-chain fatty acids.
Long-chain fatty acids have 12 or more carbon atoms and are found in foods like avocados and olive oil.
MCTs are medium-chain fatty acids and are metabolized differently by the body. Because they don’t require bile for digestion, they are transported directly to the liver, where they can be used as fuel or converted into ketones…. so they are great for energy whilst on a diets that is low in carbs
MCTs have several benefits:
1) MCTs may boost athletic performance as they are rapidly absorbed by the body and converted into energy. This makes them a quick source of fuel, especially when carbs are running low
2) They may help in weight (fat) loss by increasing energy and the feeling of satiety whilst on a low-carbohydrate diet
3) MCTs seem to play role in improved cognitive function and mental clarity.
4) MCTs may support gut health as it has antibacterial and antifungal properties, which assist with promoting healthy gut microbiome.
5) MCTs may lower cholesterol thereby supporting heart health
Warning: To ensure a happy, acclimatised digestive system, START WITH A VERY LOW, CONSERVATIVE DOSE!
Take: Half a teaspoon for a few days in the morning, then move up to one teaspoon after a few days.
If exercising, take it 30 minutes before training.
If on a low-carbohydrate diet, same as above, but introduce a second dose around lunchtime after a week or two.
Note: It is NOT necessary to take a third dose in the afternoon or evening, as you may feel excess energy when you need to sleep.
Max dosage is 3 teaspoons per day (15mls), but increase slowly according to personal tolerance
